NHL Insider publicly leaks failed trade involving New York Rangers longest-tenured player Chris Kreider

The Toronto Maple Leafs seemed like they'd be a surefire bet to land forward Chris Kreider. But for such a meager return for the veteran, the Maple Leafs apparently didn't have the means to get it done.

At least, that's what's been reported by The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta.

The three-time 30+ goal scorer would be moved to Anaheim in exchange for center Carey Terrance and a 2025 draft pick.

The Rangers utilized the trade as a cap dump, while receiving a prospect and draft pick in return.

It's puzzling how such a team can compete for the Stanley Cup finals every season, but their cache of assets is always drained. Although what we're saying could be purely speculation, as the Leafs could've called Drury soon after with an offer that wasn't what Drury was after.

There's a lot to like about the Anaheim Ducks lineup, as they have a budding young core and talent in the crease, which can deliver wins. With Joel Quenneville as bench boss, he should know right away how to manage and utilize a talent like Kreider.

While GM Brad Treliving was too late to the game, and the offer wasn't much, or otherwise, there would've been a bidding war for the 13-year NHL veteran.

This season, Kreider scored 30 points (22-8) in 68 games under Peter Laviolette's Rangers squad.
