New York Rangers legend admits to using drugs during games
Mark Messier found a home quickly in the New York Rangers system, as he played ten years of his career as a Blueshirt.
He would help the team secure a Stanley Cup under the leadership of Mike Keenan in 1994.
Messier would appear on Pat McAfee's show, which has changed its format to accommodate the sport of hockey lately, this time interviewing the legend from Alberta, Canada.
In doing so, the conversation went to an unfamiliar place, as McAfee mentioned the use of psychedelics to improve his play and mindset:
«I have a story where in my life I took shrooms in college, and it changed my perspective on how I was gonna focus on football that night,» McAfee recalled.«It did flip a switch for me, and I stuck with it. Without it, I don't think I have the mindset to go on to be who I am.»
McAfee after sharing his experiences in college, with the West Virginia Mountaineers, would ask for Messier's experiences with the illicit.
"As an athlete, we probably spend 95 percent or 99 percent on our bodies, and back then, not a lot on our minds. It gave me the ability to look at a bigger picture - a vastness that is out there,» Messier said.
Messier would credit the psychedelic mushrooms with a new perspective on life, along with a sense of humility.
«It gave me a better perspective. It gave me a humility. It worked for me, and it's something that I don't regret. And, wow, what an experience. ..."This gave me the opportunity to think that I could expand my mind. I could become more understanding...and maybe a better leader in some regards," Messier added.
He mentioned he never regretted taking the plunge, as it was a beneficial experience.
Mark Messier spent 25 years in the NHL, lifting the Stanley Cup 6 times, once with the Blueshirts, and playing 12 years with the Edmonton Oilers, 10 years with the New York Rangers, and finally 3 years in Vancouver.
