New beginnings: Chris Drury issues stern statement on the hiring of head coach Mike Sullivan
GM Chris Drury issued a statement to the press regarding the new Head Coach Mike Sullivan's hire. Drury believes the former Pittsburgh Penguins Coach's resume speaks for itself, and is thrilled to have him on board. Sullivan has two Stanley Cups to his name and has coached the Penguins for the last decade.
GM Chris Drury spoke highly of Mike Sullivan in today's press conference with the New York media.
Drury stated that he believes that Sullivan is a premier coach in the NHL, with his resume in the league, and in international competition, speaking for itself.
Sullivan is a two-time Stanley Cup winner and leaves the Penguins with 409 wins, the all-time wins leader as a head coach.
When he left the job in Pittsburgh, Drury aggressively pursued him, and brought him to Madison Square Garden with the hopes he'll course-correct a team that took a nosedive after winning a Presidents' Trophy in 2023-2024.
Sullivan will still be paid by the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers as his contract with the Penguins ends in 2026-2027.
Drury must believe that Sullivan can do something not even Peter Laviolette could, as he hired him with speed as soon as he walked away from the team he coached the last decade.
Sullivan was promoted to the head coaching job in Pittsburgh in 2015, after leading the team's AHL affillate in Wilkes-Barre Scranton.
His all-time NHL coaching record is 917-479-311-15. Two Stanley Cups (2016, 2017) and a winning percentage of .528.
Mike Sullivan joins Joel Quenneville in recent NHL coaching hires, as teams are re-evaluating their lineups and personnel ahead of the draft and free agency.
