NHL Insider Emily Kaplan has got the drop on the latest news for the New York Rangers today. It involves former Philadelphia Flyers Head Coach John Tortorella, whom they believe could join the Rangers in a supporting role.
It seems like the coaching carousel never ends in the NHL. For John Tortorella, his ride hasn't ended yet, even after the latest controversy in Philadelphia.
According to NHL Insider Emily Kaplan, he could end up returning to the New York Rangers.
Kaplan, and Kevin Weekes feel that he's strong possibility to return to Madison Square Garden. But the question remains, is it a Head Coaching role? Or in more of an ancillary position.
Retreads have happened before, and given that Lindy Ruff is now in Buffalo for his second stint, GM Chris Drury could give Tortorella another shot in New York.
The question is, if he was brought here, how would the Rangers fare any better given their performance under Peter Laviolette?
Tortorella's first stint with the New York Rangers began in 2009 and ended in 2013. He'd end his time in New York having coached 319 games, with a record of 171-118-1-29, with a .583 winning percentage.
He could ostensibly turn the Rangers around again next season, and then just as soon lose them the next.
Tortorella has a way of wearing very thin on NHL players' patience, as his tenure in Philadelphia only lasted two years, instead of the six he coached in New York and Columbus.
The only question left is, will John Tortorella be able to take the Rangers to the cup?
I'm doubtful, but I'm just an armchair GM.
