The New York Rangers' last two bouts in the Winter Classic saw them face off against their Metropolitan Division rivals, the Philadelphia Flyers. In 2018, they took on Jack Eichel and the Buffalo Sabres. How did they fare? We hope their next match against the Florida Panthers in 2026 is as compelling.

The Winter Classic is an event that requires special attention from NHL fans every year. We get to relive the outdoor style of a game that echoes old-school hockey, while players of each team play in front of a packed stadium.
The atmosphere is typically cold, but the visuals and the play are epic. For the Rangers, the next one in 2026 is set to be a barnburner between the Blueshirts and the Florida Panthers.
The renewal of a rivalry that has brought us a lot of great and competitive hockey in 2022 and 2024.
For the Rangers, there's a precedent of victory in the Winter Classic, and their last two games have shown what they're capable of in the coldest part of winter.

The New York Rangers History In The Winter Classic

While we have a lot to look forward to at LoanDepot Park in Miami in 2026, how did they do in recent years?

2012: The Flyers

The first time the Rangers suited up in the cold of winter was against the Flyers in Citizens Bank Park. The original plan was for the event to take place at Lincoln Financial Park, but the Eagles had a home game. The game would be pushed back by weather (the sun, in fact), and the Rangers wouldn't look so good at the start.
Michael Rupp would, however, push momentum in the Rangers' favor, scoring two goals in the second and third periods. Brad Richards would solidify the win with a goal past Sergei Bobrovsky, giving them the lead 3-2.
Henrik Lundqvist would stand on his head, and overshadow the team, after a penalty from Ryan McDonagh would give Danny Briere a penalty shot, Hank would protect the five hole from the Flyers winger and earn the win.

2018: The Sabres

The Rangers would come out on top 3-2 in OT against Jack Eichel and the Sabres in a game where the team dominated Citi Field.
The Rangers, for tax purposes, were listed as the away team, a tax exemption that required them to play all games at home. So, despite the odd nature of the fact that the Sabres played six hours away, they were the home team.
Paul Carey and Michael Grabner gave the Rangers a 2-0 lead after putting goals past Robin Lehner. Sam Reinhart and Rasmus Ristolainen wouldn't take it lying down and would answer with two goals of their own, and the game would require OT to finish.
2:15 in OT, Jacob Josefson was called for tripping, and gave JT Miller a chance to end the game after a rebound from Kevin Shattenkirk.
The backhanded goal would end the Sabres' hopes for victory and keep the Rangers in the win column once more.
