The New York Rangers will have to consider other methods if they want to make a draft pick in the 1st-round of the 2025 NHL Draft. That could involve trading RFAs like K'Andre Miller, Alexis Lafreniere, or Will Cuylle.
With the New York Rangers completing the JT Miller trade by sending the 12th OA pick in 2025 to the Pittsburgh Penguins, picks are hard to come by.
Especially if you're not a seller. But for GM Chris Drury, that could be the route he has to take during this retool. If the team wants to restock the prospect pipeline, it will have to consider trading one of the team's RFAs or top prospects.
There are four players Drury could move in order to get a first-round draft pick and a few he may not want to part with.
This would be a highly unpopular move for the Rangers to take. Cuylle had a career year in 2024-25, scoring a total of 45 points (20-25), playing on both the 1st and 3rd lines this season.
He's an RFA and still has received a new contract offer from the Rangers yet, and could be plucked from the team with an offer sheet. As a reliable third-line winger, the team has been looking to improve their top-six, with supposed interest in JJ Peterka.
If the team is serious about acquiring Peterka, they could move Cuylle for a first-round pick, add a top-six forward, and give them more leeway with their cap space.
The Rangers have drawn interest from 12 to 15 teams in the league in regards to K'Andre Miller's talents. A former first-round draft pick, Miller has wheels, can shoot, and is an RFA.
While he's had a down year in New York, he could still fetch a 1st-round pick for him, considering the demand is there. With the team expected to sign veteran defenseman
Vladislav Gavrikov in free agency, they could trade Miller and regain a foothold in the draft while adding his replacement in July.
Could this be the game all along? Send your 1st to Pittsburgh and then trade Miller for another 1st-rounder?
Lafreniere is a former 2020 1st-round draft pick by the New York Rangers. Drury is ruthless in his dealings and could find himself moving Lafreniere in order to attain another 2025 1st-round pick.
Other teams in the NHL would likely love to make a trade for Lafreniere, who, despite his declining production in 2024-25, has plenty of upside left.
Schneider was selected 19th overall by the Rangers in the 2020 NHL Draft. He's been pursued by the Vancouver Canucks during the negotiations for JT Miller, and has a sizable frame at 6'4", 213 pounds.
This season, he's performed well as a bottom-pairing defenseman, playing a total of 80 games and tallying 21 points with a TOI of 17:52 a night.
With the Will Borgen extension, Schneider may become trade bait ahead of the NHL Draft next week.
