Metropolitan Veteran, and ex-New York Islander, Kyle Okposo, has returned to the NHL after his retirement. Okposo finally won a cup with the Florida Panthers, and at the end of 2023-2024, would hang up his skates. Now, he's returned to the NHL to help his fellow players in the NHLPA.
Kyle Okposo had a storybook ending to his career. He took a risk to join the Florida Panthers, who weren't expected to win the Stanley Cup in 2023-2024, but he did and helped defeat the Edmonton Oilers.
Now, nearly a year later, Okposo has found himself returning to the game in another fashion, as he joins NHLPA Executive Director Marty Walsh and Ron Hainsey in a new role with the labor organization.
He will help usher in a new era for the PA and is excited to continue his journey beyond the ice.
Okposo joins the NHLPA as a Business Development and Player Engagement Advisor.
"Being freshly retired, I have relationships with a lot of different players and have some different ideas on how we can create excitement and engagement with the current members of the union.
For me, just having the relationships with those guys and being able to talk to them like we're in a locker room is going to be, I think, an asset to the PA."
A lot of NHL players will find themselves returning to the teams who drafted them in leadership, development or advisory roles.
But for Okposo, he's taken a different path, and will help engage the players on the ice and help shape the next CBA that benefits all NHL players on a contractual basis.
