Former New York Rangers defenseman and pending UFA Calvin de Haan was on the Cam and Strick Podcast recently. When asked about his short tenure with the New York Rangers, he quipped about the team and Chris Drury, "the checks weren't bouncing".

Despite de Haan and the New York Rangers' rocky relationship established at the end of the regular season, you have to wonder why he stuck around.
We've all been jobless at one point, and for professional athlete's sometimes it's not so easy to step away, unless you're someone like Michael Jordan, or Connor McDavid.
But for de Haan, you have to wonder what was going through his head while he remained unhappy, as a result of underutilization.
Head Coach Peter Laviolette would make de Haan, an NHL veteran, a healthy scratch after playing only three games and scoring a point. He deserved another look, right? He was on the bench for the last stretch of the season, which infuriated de Haan, but he still stuck it out.
«Was it frustrating? Of course. But the checks weren't bouncing at the end of the day, so it could've been a lot worse. It didn't suck,» de Haan said on the podcast.
The Rangers would acquire Carson Soucy from the Vancouver Canucks, and utilize Urho Vaakanainen, and Zac Jones in his place while he was stapled to the bench.
«There was a rotation at some point of some d-men coming in and out of the lineup and I was like 'F- yeah! Here we go! Here we go!' And my name never fell into it, and then I kind of knew my season was cooked at that point,» de Haan explained.

While de Haan handled it in good form here, it's still puzzling due to the fact that he was one of the team's best defenseman, and 5v5 per Natural Stat Trick:
The Rangers had an expected goals share of 60.17 percent with de Haan on the ice 5v5, per Natural Stat Trick.

Great job Laviolette.
After it all, de Haan would remain humble and would explain that GM Chris Drury was good to him after it was all said and done. He and de Haan would talk it out over the phone and get an understanding of the decision-making from the top-up.
De Haan isn't ruling out a return to the Rangers after all of this, surprisingly.
