The New York Rangers and GM Chris Drury have received a terrible ranking from The Athletic. According to the sports website, the Rangers have one of the worst contract efficiencies in the league, taking a dip from 6th to 24th.

The Athletic likes to analyze NHL teams' contracts to see how they manage talent year by year. For GM Chris Drury, it seems like he's gotten a failing grade in the latest rankings.
By doing so, The Athletic is able to analyze each player's market value and give the GMs a failing or passing grade on their deal-making skills.
The Rangers were ranked 6th in contract efficiency last season, and this season? It doesn't seem to have gotten any better in 2025.

The New York Rangers Contract Efficency

The New York Rangers were given a ranking of 24th this year. The metric The Athletic uses determines a player's market value and gives us an idea of the player's surplus value.
That is, if they're playing above their contract, below it. For the Rangers, you could guess, the team is in the negative in surplus value.
To give you an idea:
Part of the issue is simply the result of aging, where players like Artemi Panarin, Vincent Trocheck and Mika Zibanejad all took a step back in 2024-25. Trocheck's deal still looks worthwhile - it's just not the big win it seemed to be this time last year. Adding J.T. Miller, 32, to the core only adds to the risk.

While Igor Shesterkin's $92 million deal isn't helping the team either, after his heinous 2024-25 season saw him take a step back.
The Rangers are on the hook for $11.5 million AAV for the next eight years. A whopper of a contract for the former Vezina Trophy winner.
While former 1st overall pick Alexis Lafreniere has proven that his contract is not worth the ink it was penned with, as he took a step back this season. Going from a 57-point (29-28) season in 2023-24 to a 45-point year in 2024-25.
Lafreniere's deal costs the team $7.5 million and is in the negative when it's weighted for market value (surplus value).
GM Chris Drury will have to put in a lot of work to correct things over the next few seasons, and it could mean more retooling to correct past errors.
