Trusted NHL reporter shockingly leaks the New York Rangers top priority this offseason
Remy Mastey of The Hockey News revealed yesterday that the New York Rangers top priority this summer is to sign Rangers forward Will Cuylle to a new deal to stave off an offer sheet.
Cuylle who is currently overseas playing for Team Canada in the World Championships has had a great year for the Rangers and has taken significant strides forward.
Rangers must sign Cuylle as soon as possible
Over the past season, he has become a complete and very reliable two way forward along with increasing his offensive totals.
He is currently a restricted free agent and is likely to be looked at many general managers as the Rangers are currently tight to the cap and would be hard pressed to sign him openly without negotiation.
Last offseason, many in the NHL witnessed St Louis Blues general manager Doug Armstrong sent two offer sheets to
Philip Broberg and
Dylan Holloway of the Edmonton Oilers to which the Oilers did not match the offer and allowed both players to leave the organization.
The Rangers general manager Chris Drury has stated that he would like to change the look of his team, and one aspect would be to continue bringing younger players into the mix and building a faster and more aggressive team under new head coach Mike Sullivan.
Cuylle will be a big part of the future of the Rangers
The 23-year-old forward was drafted by the Rangers in 2020, second round 60th overall. Standing at 6 foot 3 and 212 lbs, he brings much needed size and the ability to score as he continues to find his way into the top six forwards of this team.
Last season he played all 82 games comma scoring 20 goals with 25 assists with 45 and was a + 12 despite only playing 15 minutes and 5 seconds of average ice time.
Cuylle's level of play will continue to rise especially with Sullivan behind the bench and it's paramount that the Rangers find a way to sign him as soon as possible whether it's through a bridge deal of two years or a long-term deal that will benefit both parties.
The Rangers are also focusing on their draft plans as the NHL Entry Draft will begin on June 27th.
