Troubling reports speculate surrounding defenseman's future with the New York Rangers

Carson Soucy's future with the New York Rangers appears to be a mixed bag. The Rangers defenseman was acquired in a trade for a high-third-round pick and could be available during free agency. But with USA Today's Vince Mercogliano's latest report, the truth is opaque.
The New York Rangers acquired defenseman Carson Soucy on March 6th from the Vancouver Canucks for a third-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
It wouldn't take long for Soucy to find a spot on the bench as a healthy scratch by Head Coach Peter Laviolette. As his 16-game stint wasn't exactly up to expectations, posting only 3 points (1-2) on the bottom pairing.
According to The Athletic's James Mirtle, the Rangers have made the defenseman available for trade.
Which would be a wise way for Drury to recoup a draft pick for someone who wasn't a huge impact on the team's blueline.
But, at this point in his career, the team wouldn't expect much in return for the defenseman as his trade value has tanked.
«Carson Soucy ... I don't think the Rangers would be opposed to trading him but I also don't think they would be willing to sell low on a guy that they just gave up a high third-round pick for,» Vince Z. Mercogliano of USA Today said.
For now, the plan seems obvious, as the 2025-26 season could see him flourish under Mike Sullivan:
«Given all the moves and things that have happened in the last 12 months and all the bad PR the Rangers gotten ... they're probably going to bring him back and bank on him playing better under Mike Sullivan.»
For now, it seems the team will have to wait another year before they can be free of Soucy, and possibly move him as a rental at the end of 2026.
Although now it'd make more sense to strike while the iron is hot.
