Rumor: New York Rangers Seeking To Reunite With Former Forward From The Pacific Division
Forward Alex Wennberg is a pending UFA, and due to the San Jose Sharks' rebuild, it's assumed they'll be sellers. With the Rangers continuing their retool, could he be a prime candidate to return to the team?
For the Sharks, it's about acquiring assets and cap space in addition to adding the best players in the draft year by year. The main star of the cast at the moment is
Macklin Celebrini, along with
Sam Dickinson and goaltender
Yaroslav Askarov, as the future of the team.
That leaves forward Alex Wennberg, who is a pending UFA (unrestricted free agent) in 2025-26, as a trade chip.
Could he be a good candidate to return to the Rangers?
Alex Wennberg to the New York Rangers?
The New York Rangers could fit Alex Wennberg back into the lineup in their bottom-six, in our opinion.
While Michael DeRosa believes he's more of a fit in the top nine, his play during the latter stages of his career shows he's just not capable of more, unfortunately.
But it would be a great depth option for the Blueshirts, who have fledgling center
Noah Laba occupying the third line at the moment.
In 77 games with the San Jose Sharks last season, he scored 35 points (10-25), but those numbers, in our opinion, aren't indicative of a bigger role.
He could be another option for the Rangers' penalty kill, giving Chris Drury another reason to revisit him in the future should a reunion take place.
Wennberg is
one of five alternate captains for the Sharks this 2025-26 season.
