Revisiting Mike Keenan's Legacy With The New York Rangers: Will Mike Sullivan Reach This Level Of Success?
Former New York Rangers Head Coach Mike Keenan has left a legacy in New York, unlike any other. He brought the team their last Stanley Cup in 1994, with Madison Square Garden rejoicing upon victory. With the Centennial Season about to begin, we look at his accomplishments in the NHL..
The New York Rangers Centennial season will kick off in October, as the team celebrates 100 years in the NHL.
The team has had some legends roll through the arena, including Mark Messier, Wayne Gretzky, Jaromir Jagr, and Rick Nash, all suiting up for the Blueshirts.
But sometimes, the coaching staff doesn't get its due, and for former Head Coach
Mike Keenan, we'll look back at his legacy today.
Mike Keenan's Legacy In New York
The New York Rangers have had in total of 38 coaches who have been the bench boss for the Original Six franchise.
Such names as Herb Brooks, John Tortorella, and Glen Sather have led the team along with a laundry list of NHL legends.
One whose name sticks out in history is Mike Keenan. "Iron Mike" Keenan's record on Broadway is impressive:
Keenan holds the Rangers' coaching record for points percentage (.667) and playoff winning percentage (.696) and those marks are very unlikely to ever be matched or beaten. The 1993-94 Rangers won the Presidents' Trophy with a record of 52-24-8 and 112 points in the regular season, and went 16-7 in the playoffs to capture the Stanley Cup and snap a 54 year drought.
Keenan's winning percentage in the playoffs is impressive, not to mention his breaking of the Rangers' Stanley Cup drought will never be forgotten.
After winning the Stanley Cup, he'd leave the organization only a month afterwards, stunning all Rangers fans.
Keenan would become a journeyman in the NHL, coaching in St. Louis, Boston, Vancouver, Florida, Calgary, and eventually, he'd help launch the Kunlun Red Stars, now Shanghai Dragons, from infancy.
It may be some time before we ever see another Rangers coach with the success he found on Broadway.
