An anonymous NHL executive stated the very obvious regarding the New York Rangers' position in the league. They'll need to start the year strong in Madison Square Garden, as there are multiple questions surrounding players like Artemi Panarin, who may or may not be extended, along with the quest for the playoffs.
The New York Rangers finished 5th in the Metropolitan Division. A division they dominated only a year prior in the NHL, winning a Presidents' Trophy under Peter Laviolette's leadership.
The regression hit the team hard, as it seemed that nothing could and did go right for the Rangers. The curse is real.
However, one NHL executive who'd remain anonymous stated something very obvious regarding the team's goals next season.
Quote by Peter Baugh of The Athletic.
one Eastern Conference executive said. «It's a critical year for the whole organization. Looking at that team and what they have and what they're doing and where they're going, I think it's an incredibly important year.» #NYR
Not only do fans wonder about Artemi Panarin's future with the team, as he has only a year left on his contract, which has paid him handsomely at $11.642 million AAV.
The former 120-point forward regressed to 89 points (37-52) and could end up finding a new home in the NHL if he's unable to find his elite game again.
While the team is busy trying to dig itself out of the hole it's in after a 39-36-7 year, and missing the playoffs after winning the Division a year beforehand.
The remaining questions surrounding the prospects that may make it to the NHL, and you have to wonder whether they'll be a part of the big push to the postseason or not.
For now, the Rangers are a bubble team, and that's troubling for GM Chris Drury.
