2022 New York Rangers draft pick Zakary Karpa didn't receive an ELC from the team that drafted him. But in 2025, he'll suit up for the AHL's Hartford Wolfpack as he signed a one-year deal with the team on Thursday.
The 23-year-old former Harvard hockey player was selected 191st overall in the 6th round of the 2022 NHL Draft. He'll join the Wolfpack during the 2025 season and hopes to climb the depth chart enough to get a look in the NHL.
The senior center had a spectacular face-off win percentage in collegiate hockey with 52.4% and a total of 7 points (1 goal, 6 assists) in 31 games in the ECAC.
Karpa served as Harvard's Captain for the past two seasons and scored a total of 35 points (16 goals, 19 assists) in 117 games.
He was a key role player in the organization, helping the Harvard team to win the ECAC Championship in 2021-2022, where he'd score a total of 12 points (6 goals, 6 assists) in 33 games, coincidentally a career-high in the ECAC.
However, it seems this year he was struggling as he didn't score his first goal until the latter part of the season against Clarkson.
Karpa has great leadership capabilities, good size (6'2", 195 lbs), and an NHL pedigree through his family. His father, Dave, played for the Rangers from 2001-2003.
Instead of signing him to an ELC, the Rangers will monitor his progress in the AHL with the Wolfpack in the meantime.
Kapa deepens the ranks at the center position in the AHL, an explanation for the signing.
