During his introductory press conference, the topic was brought up and he felt that there is plenty of leadership within the room no matter who wears the captaincy or not.
Several canadiates are on the short list for Rangers captain
"One thing that stands out from these talks is that there's a strong leadership presence in that room," Sullivan said. "Leadership comes in many forms-whether a player wears a letter or not. From my initial discussions, there's a lot of character in this group. Chris and I will work through these decisions together." Mike Sullivan
It's been since December 6 that the Rangers have not had a captain after general manager Chris Drury made the decision to trade
Jacob Trouba to
the Anaheim Ducks.
Several names have emerged as potential candidates and one will certainly be JT Miller.
Since returning to the Rangers, Miller has shown his leadership qualities and determination to help the Rangers win more hockey games and put them back in the playoff hunt. He is a long term player for the Rangers as he has five years remaining in his contract and continues to rise.
Sullivan also holds a high opinion for Rangers defenseman Adam Fox who could also become the next captain. Fox has shown his leadership abilities as he also won the Norris trophy and has been mentioned as an elite player in the league ranking fifth in all time points as a Rangers defenseman. It's safe to say that fox will certainly be considered for the role.
The final player who will likely be the frontrunner for the captaincy is Rangers forward Vincent Trocheck. Trocheck has the respect and the love of his teammates and has shown his ability in front of the camera to be a great spokesman for the Blueshirts.
It was noticeable during last year's heartbreak loss in the Eastern Conference final where he had shown why he should be the next captain of the Rangers.
«I want to be a part of the reason that we do right the ship,» Trocheck said on breakup day. «We don't have very many opportunities to win a Stanley Cup and that's the whole reason why everybody in this locker room plays the game.
I'm looking forward to having this summer to figure things out. I have a lot of things in mind that we can work on and get better at. I do take responsibility for a lot of it.» - Vincent Trocheck
Both Drury and Sullivan will take their time deciding who the captain will be as they will evaluate everyone on the roster and likely named their next captain later this year.
