The Dallas Stars Jason Robertson's trade rumors continue to spike, as training camps march closer and closer. It seemed as if he'd be traded any day now, but GM Jim Nill, in order to clear cap space from their roster, trade chatter picked up again, and the New York Rangers and Chris Drury should take advantage of this opportunity.
The Dallas Stars only have $1.085 million in cap space at the moment, and could afford to clear some by trading forward Jason Robertson.
With the trade of Matt Dumba to the Pittsburgh Penguins, the team is out of cap hell for now. But what's better than some cap space? More.
Arbitration Blues
If the team were to move Robertson, they could recapture $7.75 million AAV and avoid arbitration with the superstar forward.
While the murmurs may continue, any serious talks may have stagnated for now, but according to NHL Insider Nick Kypreos, he remains a target for NHL teams.
With Mikko Rantanen now in the fold, on a premium $12 million AAV, the team could end up having to part ways with the former 80-point scorer.
That would be GM Chris Drury's music. Robertson lacks a trade clause in his current contract, and the team could move him before they make it in front of a third-party when he attains RFA status.
While the usual suspects are involved, according to The Hockey News (Utah Mammoth, Detroit Red Wings, Seattle Kraken, and Los Angeles Kings) only one team is a contender.
That could put the Rangers in the forefront, as they could sell Madison Square Garden, and the possibility of being a contender to Robertson in order to make it happen.
It remains to be seen how the Stars perform this season, but if they do poorly, they could see a reshaping of the lineup after 2026.
The Rangers need to keep tabs on Robertson.
