Quick would prove to be consistent, playing 26 games with an 18-6-2 record, 2.62 GAA, and a .911 save percentage.
That's not the only role he's filled though, he's also become a mentor and best friend to Igor Shesterkin. The two-time Stanley Cup Champion has been a presence Shesterkin appreciates.
«Quick's arrival had only a positive effect on me. He is a great goalie and person,» Shesterkin said in an interview with Daria Tuboltseva for Rg.com. «Quick can adjust to you. If you want, he can talk to you like an experienced guy and maybe even a best friend. It's nice to have such a colleague with so much experience.»
When Shesterkin was going through a rough patch last season, it was Quick who helped him through it, the veteran got him back on track.
«John helped me find myself, calm down, and continue doing my job,» Shesterkin explained. «I watched him play, enjoyed it, and noticed something for myself. And step by step, I found my game.»
Shesterkin would find his game again, with a 2.34 GAA and .927 save percentage, and would help lead the Rangers to the Eastern Conference Finals.
It's upstanding to see Quick grow into more than just a backup role, and gain a new friend along the way.
Quick has shown himself to be selfless, knowing what role he has to play in New York. One of the best goalies in Los Angeles has found himself having to take a backseat to Shesterkin and he's found strength and meaning in it.
