Along with Rangers former rivals goaltender, MacKenzie Blackwood who at one point in time was thought to be a part of the New Jersey Devils future, has been traded.
Back on June 27th, 2023 the Devils had enough of a Blackwood, a goalie who wasn't able to steal the net from prospects Akira Schmid and Nico Daws.
The New Jersey Devils have traded goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood to the San Jose Sharks for a 2023 sixth round pick.
Yet, Blackwood's downfall in New Jersey led to his trade and resurgence in San Jose.
He could only play in 25 games in 2021-22 and he posted an 89.2% overall save percentage and a -11.03 GSAA in those games. Likewise last season, he posted an 89.3% overall save percentage and a -6.08 GSAA in 22 games. This also shows that Blackwood's decline has been real and poor for the team.
However, former Rangers goaltender Alexandar Georgiev was unable to fulfill the role as a starter with the Colorado Avalanche was sent to the San Jose Sharks.
Breakdown of the trade that took place earlier today between the Sharks and Avalanche
The Sharks will get goalie Alexandar Georgiev, forward Nikolai Kovalenko, a 2025 fifth-round pick, and a 2026 second-round pick.
While the Avalanche will get goalie Mackenzie Blackwood, depth forward Givani Smith, and and 2027 fifth-round pick.
Blackwood will likely back up or share the net with newly acquired goalie Scott Wedgewood.
Clear facts that continue to prove the New York Rangers made the right decision by moving on from Alexandar Georgiev.
But now the same question stands, Will Georgiev be able to succeed with the San Jose Sharks?
