Are GM Chris Drury and the New York Rangers satisfied with the team in front of them? If so, this could look like another situation where Igor Shesterkin is Carey Price to a dismal Montreal Canadiens team in front of him.
While with no sense of irony we say this, it looks like Igor Shesterkin's path could mirror Carey Price's with the Canadiens.
Shesterkin was rewarded handsomely at the beginning of the season with a $92 million deal. The team would go through some struggles early in the year, but by the halfway point of the season it seemed difficult to dream of the playoffs.
Now, at the end of the year not even Shesterkin's goaltending can save the team from their fate.
«Pretty high,» Igor Shesterkin said about missing the disappointment after missing the playoffs. «10/10.»
The Rangers like Shesterkin played like a well-oiled machine during parts of the season, but they had their off-nights too.
But in reality, the team didn't do much to help Quick, or Shesterkin as the team would go on stretches of losing streaks and could only put together wins infrequently.
The defensive weaknesses shone through, and given how different the Rangers' defensive core looks compared to the beginning of the year, is there a lack of chemistry in the lineup?
Shesterkin has had to be the reliable one in the lineup, and sometimes the burden is too much to bear.
Despite some nagging injuries at the beginning of the season, he'd put together a 26-29-5 record, 2.91 GAA, and a .903.
The worst statistical season of his career. The Rangers will need to course correct and add the right pieces to the lineup, or they risk losing Shesterkin early in his career like Price did.
He took the Habs to multiple playoff series, but never won a Stanley Cup, all because the team wasn't built right around him.
The Rangers need to relieve the burden on his shoulders and give him some good help, something that seems difficult to come by in New York lately.
