3-time Stanley Cup Winning coach making strong bid to become the Rangers next head coach
The New York Rangers will be actively looking for a new Head Coach if GM Chris Drury isn't doing so already. One name that has dropped is Joel Quenneville, a former three-time Stanley Cup champion with the Chicago Blackhawks.
The New York Rangers have fired Peter Laviolette for a disappointing 2024-2025 season. This was after the team was in flux, as the chemistry in the locker room had been in question. NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman thought the team had been broken and unfixable.
So, the solution? Firing a Presidents' Trophy-winning coach in Peter Laviolette.
One coach who hasn't seen the bench in over four years, who is interested in the available gig?
Joel Quenneville.
Whose track record is one of the best in the NHL. The 66-year-old coach covets the job in New York and, after being reinstated in July of 2024, would like to find a new job in the league after so long.
Quenneville, if he is hired by GM Chris Drury, would be a huge upgrade for the Rangers. His career coaching record is 1768-969-572-77, with a .612 winning percentage. Three Stanley Cups were won with the Chicago Blackhawks during their dynasty in the 2010s.
He concluded his tenure in Chicago with a 452-249-96 regular season record, a 76-52 record in the postseason,
His protege, Andrew Brunette, hasn't fared so well in the NHL despite doing well with his initial resignation in 2021, leaving the Panthers in his care.
Now, with the firing of Laviolette, GM Chris Drury has a smorgasbord of choices for head coach in 2025-2026.
