It was reported yesterday that NHL insider and Sportsnet reporter Elliotte Friedman confirmed that the New York Rangers did not tell Barclay Goodrow about the waiver pick up by the San Jose Sharks until the last minute.
"I've heard that one of the reasons he's upset was that he didn't find out until right before he was put on waivers..."
Once it was known, it was widely reported that he was extremely unhappy with the Rangers organization and Freidman also confirmed that the San Jose Sharks were on his no trade list. Goodrow spent part of his career with the Sharks and a vital member of the Rangers during the Eastern Conference final as he scored a couple of goals to help the team remain in the playoffs.
"The Rangers have talked publically about how valuable Goodrow was for them," Frieman said. "I think there's a little bit of, well, if I was so good for you, you could've done a little better for me."
The Rangers were in the process of recuperating salary cap space as the team is currently cap strapped at $9 million and unable to make any changes. Goodrow's contract had three years remaining with a cap hit of 3.6 million per season. Since he was selected off waivers, the Rangers avoided a buyout and retaining any salary in a trade.
This move has shown how general manager Chris Drury intends to run the Rangers as he looks for any avenue possible to make the team better including recovering cap space by dumping other players onto waivers.
