The New York Rangers need something to get them over the hump after a disappointing elimination to the Florida Panthers in the Eastern Conference Finals when they had Stanley Cup aspirations. Well, one option did come up, however, it was shut down.
Columbus Blue Jackets forward
Patrik Laine was a trade target that teams were looking at, and someone the Rangers would have pursued.
However, Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell said in a media conference that he legally cannot trade Laine because he is still in the assistance program.
Waddell also stated that teams wanted to talk with him about a possible contract, but they can't do that, either.
The 26-year-old winger is looking for a fresh start. Laine has been a steady, for the most part, a point-per-game player for his whole career.
Unfortunately, injuries and status has been an issue, as he hasn't played more than 26 games in a season since 2019. Then again, if Columbus wants to retain some salary on his $8.7 million pay, it won't be a bad move for NY.
