Breaking: Barclay Goodrow Was Caught Off Guard by Rangers Waiving Him
Barclay Goodrow made a name for himself on the Tampa Bay Lightning's 3rd line and would secure two-Stanley Cups.
The infamous 3rd line, would be scattered across the NHL as Goodrow would end up in New York, as a depth piece with hopes of more success, and a 3rd Stanley Cup.
But he was unable to replicate the same experience, and to add salt to the wound GM Chris Drury didn't tell him until the last moment, that he was being waived by the team.
"I've heard that one of the reasons he's upset was that he didn't find out until right before he was put on waivers..."
@FriedgeHNIC and @JeffMarek dissect the fallout between Barclay Goodrow and #NYR.
"The Rangers have talked publically about how valuable Goodrow was for them," Friedman said. "I think there's a little bit of, well, if I was so good for you, you could've done a little better for me."
Given that Goodrow has a $3.6 Million dollar cap hit, as a 4th liner and a 15 NTC, a trade would prove to be difficult for GM Chris Drury.
Drury would have to retain salary in order to move him or package him with another asset, which of course New York was unwilling to do.
The Sharks, of all teams were on his NTC which seems a huge betrayal on Goodrow's end. As Larry Brooks reported, he was upset that the team didn't consult with him as to where he'd end up next.
"After losing the 2022 final after two consecutive Cup championships, the Lightning told Ryan McDonagh that if he didn't waive his full no-trade clause to accept a deal to Nashville, he would be put on waivers. McDonagh accepted the deal," Brooks wrote. Whereas with teammate Ryan McDonagh the Tampa Bay Lightning took care of the situation early, with the defenseman to work out a deal, so McDonagh wouldn't have been waived:
|
"Tampa went to [McDonagh] well in advance, and they said, look, we need the flexibility; we need to move you. If we have to, we will put you on waivers, but if you want to work with us for a couple of days, we can find a trade," Friedman said. "I have heard that one of the reasons he is upset is that he didn't find out until right before he was put on waivers."
For now, Friedman has said he hasn't spoken to Goodrow. But it appears he isn't happy with the Sharks and GM Mike Grier.
"Mike Grier has got to do what he thinks is best for his team. San Jose is looking for some veterans," he said. "I suspect that Grier knew that Goodrow wasn't crazy about the whole thing. At the end of the day, you have to run your team as you see fit."
Larry Brooks goes into to detail about how cold-blooded GM Chris Drury was in the transaction, as the human element of the deal had been removed.
