The winds of change continue to blow around the New York Rangers organization with rumors now focusing on Rangers young forward Alexis Lafrenière and his poor season play.

Lafrenière's performance this year had been lackluster at best after signing a seven year deal with the organization he fell well below expectations after having a breakout year the year before.

Lafrenière numbers dropped dramatically as the season continued

Much like the Rangers as a team, Lafrenière found himself inconsistent with his offensive production especially when it came to five on five play.
The former first overall pick in 2020 played 82 games this year, scoring 17 goals with 28 assists for 45 points and was a - 13.
Last season was his breakout year as he had scored 28 goals through 82 games for 57 points and had 40 penalty minutes. His numbers faded quickly despite having the same or similar amounts of ice time between the two seasons.
Lafrenière found success when he was put together with Rangers superstar Artemi Panarin which failed to find the same success this year.
He is currently in the final year of his original deal where he held the cap hit of $2.325 million per season and it will dramatically rise as his new seven-year deal will take hold next year holding the cap hit of $7.45 million per season Valued at $52.15 million.

Rangers hold control of potential trade of Lafrenière

The Rangers organization holds two years of complete control over his contract as his clause only kicks in in the 2027-2028 season or he will have a modified no trade clause that has eight teams lists.
There will likely be interest from other organizations who are looking to get to the cap floor as the salary cap is set to rise dramatically over the next three years.
The Rangers also may want to hang on to their young forward as newly hired head coach Mike Sullivan may find a different role or different line that could suit Lafrenière and change his game completely.
No matter the case, the Rangers will look different going into next year as general manager Chris Drury has promised the fans of change behind the bench and on the bench.
