GM Chris Drury and the New York Rangers are making sure they're backing up the Brinks truck to bring Mike Sullivan to New York. There are reports that he's signed a record deal with the team.
It appears that the New York Rangers won't be going through any retreads during the 2025-2026 season. Mike Sullivan is the new Head Coach in New York.
He's a two-time Stanley Cup winner, and he will receive a generous contract from the team based on the market.
We could speculate could be a 5-year, $6-7 million AAV contract, as one of the best American-born coaches in the league.
According to ESPN's Emily Kaplan, the Rangers signed Sullivan to a five-year contract to a dollar amount that makes him the highest-paid head coach the NHL has ever seen. While she didn't say what the exact price tag is, she mentioned that it's the «highest annual salary for a coach in NHL history.»
Mike Sullivan before his exit from the Penguins organization still had two years left on his contract with the team, paying him an AAV of $5.5 million a year.
His new contract could see him paid more than some NHL players for the next five years. Quite the irony.
The Rangers will have to figure out how to build around Sullivan, but given the number of coaching staff who'd like to win a Stanley Cup, they shouldn't have trouble finding people who'd love to work with him.
Sullivan coached the Penguins for ten seasons, with a record of 409-255-89. He only had one season under .500 during his tenure with the Penguins.
