Rangers to buyout their captain to land the biggest name in free agency
The New York Rangers are faced with a difficult decision if they want to acquire the biggest name in free agency.
Over the last few weeks, there has been tons of speculation around the National Hockey League that the Carolina Hurricanes were making impending unrestricted free agent Jake Guentzel available for a mid-round draft pick.
NHL insider Pierre LeBrun reveals that there has been a turn of events and the Hurricanes apparently haven't completely written off a Guentzel return.
Carolina hasn't given up on trying to sign Jake Guentzel. Talks ongoing.
My sense is it's going to be hard for him not to see what's out there Monday, but Canes still trying.
According to insider Frank Seravalli, a number of teams are noted to be serious suitors for Guentzel, including the New York Rangers.
However, Guentzel made quite the impact when he joined the Hurricanes with registering 25 points in 17 games with a +16 rating, then added another nine points in 11 playoff games. So the Canes just wont surrender Guentzel without receiving a fair return.
As the Hurricanes gave up a lot to acquire him form the Pittsburgh Penguins, includingMichael Bunting, forward prospectsVasily PonomarevandVille Koivunen, the rights to forwardCruz Lucius, and what turns out to be a second-round draft pick.
