The New York Rangers are out here making depth additions that are causing trouble for teams' long-term plans. Today, with the announcement of former Stanley Cup champion Connor Sheary signing a PTO with the New York Rangers, the Maple Leafs' options look a lot slimmer.

The New York Rangers and GM Chris Drury have signed former Stanley Cup champion Connor Sheary to a PTO.
The former Stanley Cup champion played in Tampa Bay last season for a $2 million AAV cost, which was originally signed with the New York Rangers.
Ironically, Sheary will be joining the Rangers on a PTO and reuniting with former Head Coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins, with whom he won a Stanley Cup, Mike Sullivan.
Sheary may have been in the Lightning organization, but was utilized more as a call-up this past season as he played in New York with the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL.
They'd place him on waivers for purposes of a contract termination after cap issues left him without a spot on the roster.

The Maple Leafs To Explore Trade Options?

With Sheary being signed to a PTO, this leaves GM Brad Treliving and the Toronto Maple Leafs in a bind as they'll have to look down the path of trades for depth options.
Shear being off the chess board gives GM Brad Treliving limited options as far as choices of offensive depth go.
At the moment, Victor Olofsson ( UFA) and Jack Roslovic (UFA) are two solid options in the middle-six of the lineup.
While they still haven't had much success when it comes to re-signing Max Pacioretty.
For the Rangers, this is a low-risk, high-reward scenario, where this could turn into a full-time contract and no real commitment until he proves himself as someone Chris Drury could find use for.
