With Trouba's 7-year, $8 million AAV contract it's starting to seem like problem, and with still two years left to go on his contract, the Rangers are unlikely to find a trade partner or to even receive a good enough return,
According to CapFriendly and their calculations, to buyout Trouba would result in a $4 million cap hit over each of the next two seasons, and then $2 million in each of the 2026-27 and 2027-28 seasons.
Back in the 2018-19 season the Rangers didn't even hesitate signing Trouba to a seven-year, $56 million free agent deal after he had a 50-point season with the Winnipeg Jets. However, right after that his stats dropped by 50% in his first season in New York.
This pass season has been more of a disappointment, as he continued to have issues moving the puck out of his own zone, and also in preventing zone entries.
To make things worse Trouba has a 15-team no-trade clause this coming season, so even if they were to find a team somehow willing to take him on, it just might not work out.
