TheNew York Rangers fan favorite Matt Rempe took it upon himself to improve his game last offseason. He'd earn a larger role in the lineup, but is still working on bettering himself. Mike Sullivan will undoubtedly find a spot for him in the fourth line, as fans in Madison Square Garden wait unabated for the 2025-26 hockey season to begin.
Matt Rempe is not shy about owning up to his shortcomings. In order to stay relevant in the NHL, the former Goon has found himself in a depth role in the lineup.
Not too different than what he's established himself in beforehand, but now he comes with some offensive upside which was missing. Now, Rempe has positioned himself as a student of the game, and it's an ongoing topic for him to dig into.
Rempe took part in the Junior Rangers Training Camp, leading practice for young hockey players. A role he'll soon return to under Mike Sullivan once training camp starts up again.
Rempe: Needs To Control The Chaos
The New York Post's Mollie Walker is curious about how Rempe will fare under Sullivan's system. A former Stanley Cup-winning coach with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
«I'm really excited to see how he looks in training camp this season,» she said, «and I'm excited to see what a guy like Mike Sullivan thinks of Matt Rempe as well.»
While Rempe has been suspended twice in his short NHL career so far, once for boarding Stars' defenseman
Miro Heiskanen. He'd return to the ice in the AHL in order to take some accountability and would soon be called up by Peter Laviolette.
The Rangers have worked with him in order to remain a physical force, but to limit penalties on the ice.
He led the team in hits per-60 minutes with 19.64, and would increase his ice time from 6:15 to 8:30. A positive step forward for himself and the team.
Rempe has improved his game after the suspension, in which he'd continue to provide more offense than expected, 8 points (5-3), a +7.
«All the hits, all the suspensions - he's still learning,» Walker said. «He's a 6-foot-9 gazelle out there who doesn't always know how to control his body - but he's learning.
For Rempe to become a key contributor for the Rangers, he'll need discipline to level out the chaos of his physicality. But for now, he's done a great job.
