Major Development: Six intriguing teams are reportedly eyeing NY Rangers former 1st overall pick
The New York Rangers could move struggling forward Alexis Lafreniere. Lafreniere was a former 1st-overall pick in 2020 and could find a fresh start elsewhere in the NHL. According to reports, there are multiple NHL teams interested in his services.
Alexis Lafreniere had a promising 2023-2024 season, where he scored 29 goals and 57 points. Even with the same linemates this season, he'd see a decline in production, scoring only 45.
This is so soon after earning a nice payday, with a cap hit of $7.45 million, over the next several years.
But we're concerned about his tenure in New York, with the prospect of a retool taking place.
In order to gain the assets to put themselves back in win-now mode, the Rangers may have to part with Lafreniere. According to the Bleacher Report there are six NHL teams interested in acquiring the forward.
Calgary Flames
Montreal Canadiens
Anaheim Ducks
Chicago Blackhawks
Utah Mammoth
Minnesota Wild.
Lafreniere has never been able to reach his true potential in New York, as a 1st overall pick. That could be because he's a bust, or due to the fact that the development program in New York isn't that great.
It's evident with
Kaapo Kakko taking off in Seattle, something is wrong in the water there and Lafreniere might be suited elsewhere.
A rebuilding team with little to no pressure might help his game, and would help restock draft picks, or the prospect pool if we're assuming he'd go to Calgary, Montreal, Utah, or Anaheim.
For now, we've got no news on whether GM Chris Drury would consider moving Lafreniere. Though he could easily garner some interest.
