The rise of the offer sheet has many general managers across the NHL preparing to potentially lose their player and the New York Rangers have young forward Will Culylle who may be that risk.
Many general managers were stunned to see general manager Doug Armstrong of the St Louis Blues offer two sheets to
Philip Broberg and
Dylan Holloway from the Edmonton Oilers in which the Oilers decided not to sign and lost both players.
Rangers will have hard decisions to make with a tight cap
The organization will take the summer to analyze how they want to proceed for next season and beyond as general manager Chris Drury has stated that he wants to make the team look different and play different under their new head coach Mike Sullivan.
The 23 year old left winger was drafted by the Rangers in 2020, second round 60th overall. Standing at 6 foot 3 and 212 lbs, he would certainly draw much interest two teams looking to bolster their top 6 and add size and heaviness that seems to be the ingredients for a Stanley Cup win.
His 2024-2025 season was a breakout year as he had played all 82 games, scoring 20 goals with 25 assists for 45 points and as a + 12 while playing 15 minutes and 5 seconds of average ice time.
With his stock on the rise, it remains to be seen on how the Rangers will be able to sign him whether to a bridge deal while he continues to prove himself to the team or signing him long term at a reasonable cap yet as the team currently only has $10.2 million in cap space for next year.
The Rangers still hold control on Cuylle As he will be a restricted free agent next year but will not hold any arbitration rights.
Offer Sheets will become normalized in the coming years
It certainly appears the Doug Armstrong has broken the glass ceiling for the option of an offer sheet which many NHL pundits feel will become the normal way of doing business as teams will look for alternative ways to help grow and develop their team even though at the expense of their counterparts.
Teams will have excessive cap space as the projected salary cap is to reach almost $110 million within the next three years which will give teams more leverage two attract young players to come to their teams and will slow down the draft pick capital during trades as teams will need to have all picks required in order to make the transaction complete.
In the meantime, the Rangers will need to be ready for anything and likely they would match anything that a team would offer for Cuylle as the Rangers feel he'll be an important part to their future in the coming years.
