The issue is that the avalanche do not have enough cap space to reacquire his services and will need to reevaluate their lineup going forward.
Several factors have come into play on why Linden will be an unrestricted free agent including the recent signing of centre Brock Nelson to a three-year deal holding the cap head of 7.5 million per season.
This signing hampered the flexibility For the avalanche which made it more difficult to retain Lindgren next season.
He was then traded to the Rangers in 2018 when he began his career and played for the Blueshirts until this year's trade deadline.
In 18 games with the Avalanche, he scored two goals with one assist for three points and was a - 1 which was a far lower number compared to earlier this year where he had 54 games and 19 points for the Rangers.
Rangers unlikely to sign Lindgren this offseason
Lindgren will likely not be signed by the Rangers this offseason as the team has turned the page and will have a different look going into next season after their embarrassing year.
Other players on the Rangers roster may be up for trade including defenseman K'andre Miller who is set to be a restricted free agent with arbitration rights and maybe too expensive for the Rangers to offer.
It remains to be seen on what Lindgren will command on the open market, but many teams are looking for defensemen and he will likely see a good payday on July 1st.
