3 players the New York Rangers are likely to move on from after this season
Three New York Rangers who are potentially on their last season with the Rangers organization.
The New York Rangers are currently still Stanley Cup contenders this season, but if they don't make something happen this year, it could very well be awhile before they become contenders again.
The organization has made a few changes this offseason, bring in a couple of new players in hopes to make it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals.
However, if things don't go well this upcoming season, it is likely the that Rangers will move on from these three players:
Jacob Trouba has been surrounded by trade rumours this offseason as the Rangers are desperately trying to clear up cap space. Trouba still has two years left on $8 million AAV deal, and a 15-team no-trade clause that will change to a 12-team after the season.
Regardless if the Rangers trade or buy out Trouba's final year, they need to do something as he becomes more of a liability on the ice, and the Rangers need the cap space for younger players.
Kaapo Kakko has just signed a one year deal with the New York Rangers this offseason, but this contract seems to be more of a «prove it» type of deal, as Kakko has been struggling to perform since the Rangers signed him.
Kakko will become be a UFA after this season once again, and if he doesn't start to produce more points or prove himself to the team, it's very likely to be his last season with the organization as he's had many chances to do so.
Kakko could eventually be traded for someone who is a consistent player and help the team win in the playoffs.
The New York Rangers just acquired Smith this offseason from the Pittsburgh Penguins and is a solid middle-six winger, especially for the Rangers.
Smith has always been able to produce, but now that he's paired with some better players with the Rangers he should have an all time high season.
Despite all that, Smith is going to require a raise after this season with the Rangers, and it's highly unlikely the organization will be able to afford it.
