The New York Rangers appear to be ready to move on from veteran defenseman Carson Soucy as the team is seeking cap space prior to the opening of this year's off season.

According to NHL reporter Harman Dayal of the Athletic, Soucy is considered one of the 9 overpriced NHL players that likely will be traded this offseason.

Rangers defense a focus of change this summer

Rangers general manager Chris Drury has been making changes to the team over the past year as he has sent several prominent players to other teams from former Rangers captain Jacob Trouba to Kaapo Kakko.
Soucy Was part of the March trade deadline acquisitions and the Rangers felt that he would turn his season around and give them the defence that they were looking for but unfortunately that was not the case and he did not perform like they hoped.
Soucy was acquired from the Canucks just before the trade deadline and filled the spot vacated by departing Ryan Lindgren on the top pair as Adam Fox's partner.

You could understand the thought process behind acquiring Soucy at the time - he was a rock-solid top-four defender for Vancouver in 2023-24 before struggling this past season - and he could theoretically check some of the boxes Lindgren provided as a steady stay-at-home presence (at least before Lindgren's game began declining). - Harman Dayal
in the last number of games of the season, he was scratched several times, and it became clear that this trade may have been a mistake. The Rangers sent a third-round pick to the Canucks in exchange for Soucy.

Soucy's cap space will be needed to help improve the Rangers

New York has approximately $13.9 million in cap space with 19 players (12 forwards, five defensemen, two goaltenders) signed.

That's enough space to re-sign restricted free agent Will Cuylle and either extend RFA K'Andre Miller or sign a top-four replacement in the event Miller is traded.

However, there wouldn't be much flexibility left over to significantly upgrade a roster that missed the playoffs. - Karman Dayal
With the Rangers moving on from Chris Kreider, it's all but certain that the Rangers will need to move Soucy's contract as $3.25 million could represent several players at either league minimum or 1 to 2 million each which would give the Rangers more depth and options going forward.
This offseason will be important for Drury as Rangers owner James Dolan has given him another five years in his contract to make the Rangers a cup winner.
With several key decisions coming in the next couple of years including re signing Artemi Panarin, It will be interesting to see how he handles it and how he improves the team.
