Mike Sullivan Issues Questionable Comment Regarding Alexis Lafreniere's "Generational Talent" Expectations
The New York Rangers' own coach, Mike Sullivan, should have full confidence in all of his players, right? Well, his latest comment regarding former 1st overall pick Alexis Lafreniere was a subtle jab at his skills more than anything.
Mike Sullivan is the newest Rangers Head Coach. He was held as an exemplary style of NHL coach, a two-time Stanley Cup winner, and a favorite of Chris Drury's.
Now, with the season in the dumps early, with a record of 4-5-2 with a 6th place standing in the Metropolitan Division, you'd think he'd know better than to
take a jab at his struggling players.
Instead, that's exactly what he's done with former
1st overall pick Alexis Lafreniere.
Mike Sullivan on Alexis Lafreniere, and expectations for a No. 1 pick.
"I think sometimes there's an assumption that just because somebody's the first overall pick, they're a generational talent. And when they're not, then that's (disappointing)... And I don't think that's fair.''
Alexis Lafreniere's Recent Struggles
Instead of being there as a means of support to help rehabilitate Alexis Lafreniere's game, Sullivan is using the bully pulpit in the media.
Lafreniere has had one career-year in the NHL under Head Coach Peter Laviolette, where he'd score 57 points (29-28) in 82 games in 2023-24.
Last season, his production would decline significantly, scoring 45 points (17-28), and he played a full season of hockey in the top-six.
We all thought that Mike Sullivan could bring the Rangers out of the ashes and into where they should be the playoffs.
Now it appears he is not capable of keeping this team engaged and in a competitive mode.
