Former controversial New York Rangers defenseman and 8-year NHL veteran has signed a contract overseas with the SKA St. Petersburg.
Throughout the offseason there has been a ton of rumours that former Rangers defenseman Tony DeAngelo would be leaving the NHL and signing overseas, but DeAngelo kept shutting these rumours down.
Despite DeAngelo denying these rumours all summer, he is now officially apart of the SKA St. Petersburg organization of the KHL
Since the news broke, Tony DeAngelo released a statement on how he's excited to be with the SKA St. Petersburg:
"I'm excited to be here," said DeAngelo as he arrived at the rink. "I heard a lot about the history and all that comes with this city."
The 28-year old defenseman was continuously involved in controversy throughout his eight years in the league, both on and off the ice, which ultimately led his career to come to an end in the NHL.
Interestingly, DeAngelo becomesthe sixth player on their SKA roster with past ties to the Hurricanes. He'll join his Carolina teammate from last season,Evgeny Kuznetsov in St. Petersburg.
An interesting fact that was pointed out by Dave Litman of the NHL Trade Rumors, Deangelo will become the sixth player on the SKA roster that had ties to the Caroline Hurricanes, and will also be joining former teammate Evgeny Kuznetsov.
