The New York Rangers went through some troubles after winning the Presidents' Trophy during the 1991-92 season. The following season, they'd miss the playoffs entirely until they hired Coach Mike Keenan, who delivered a Stanley Cup next season. Could this "be our year"?
The New York Rangers will need their wits about them, as they have hired Mike Sullivan as the new Head Coach. His hiring comes right on the firing of former Head Coach Peter Laviolette, who won the Presidents' Trophy in 2023-2024.
If you truly believe life follows patterns, the Rangers are due for some major changes in 2025-2026.
That would be that Mike Sullivan will deliver the Rangers a Stanley Cup during the 2025-2026 season.
You only need to look at the Rangers teams in the 90s to see a pattern.
So if we're on the right path, hiring Mike Sullivan was the first course correction for the Rangers franchise.
Their fifth-place finish in the Metropolitan Division shouldn't be forgotten, but a lesson to grow from.
The only difference now is, the Rangers don't have a legend like Mark Messier in the lineup to help push them through the difficult times.
In some ways, the 1990s will never be defeated when it comes to the superstar athletes it gave birth to.
Of course, Messier had his hardware before he arrived in New York, but he was an incredible linchpin for the team to win the Stanley Cup with.
The disappointment of the following season was even more stinging, with the Blueshirts finishing below .500 and missing the postseason entirely in 1992-93.
