According to NHL insider Pierre Lebrun, there's a high probability that Martin Necas maybe offer sheeted during this offseason as teams are looking for quality players who are restricted free agents.
Necas has been quite vocal with the organization on how he has been upset regarding his playing time and drop in responsibility.
The premise is that the Hurricanes are asking too much in terms of return for Necas which is leading to other NHL organizations exploring the offer sheet to extract him from the Hurricanes.
Offer sheets are pretty rare but one thing I've heard a bit this week on the Martin Necas front is a few teams wondering if that's a plausible avenue if the asking price in trade talks with Carolina remains too high. Probably a long shot play, but something to file away
It's becoming clear at the New York Rangers will not have what it takes to land Necas, as evolving hockey has predicted that the upcoming contract for him will be a seven-year deal on average of $7.5 million.
The Rangers just lost Barclay Goodrow to the San Jose Sharks and helped clear up $3.6 million over the next three years. With the contract demand, it's unlikely that they will be able to send an offer sheet to him is they're already cap strapped.
Even though offer sheets are very rare in the NHL, the Carolina Hurricanes have plenty of experience as they offer sheeted Jesperi Kotkaniemi a few years back who has not panned out for them, and it cost them $20 million.
The Rangers would be better off to stay their course in attempts to trade or look from within their own organization to help with their offensive needs.
