A new trade proposal has emerged that links the New York Rangers Mika Zibanejad to the Toronto Maple Leafs in a trade that would see Max Domi heading to the Big Apple.

This proposal would link two teams that are wanting to make major changes to their roster and would like to head in the same direction which is deep into the playoffs.

Rangers would be shedding recuperating more cap space

The Toronto Maple Leafs are currently looking for a replacement for their second line center as there is a strong possibility that John Tavares could be lost to free agency after having a great season scoring 38 goals.
Since there is a lack of quality centres in the unrestricted free agency market, the Leafs may be forced to make a trade to acquire one and Zibanejad has been linked to the team.
The Rangers have a desire to shed more salary and would regain roughly $5 million of cap space if this deal were to go through and would bring back a player who had strong success in this year's playoffs especially against the Ottawa Senators.
The Rangers would need to convince Zibanejad at Toronto would be a good fit as he currently holds a no movement clause which stretches through the remaining four years of his deal.

NHL insider has linked the Leafs to Zibanejad

NHL insider Jonas Siegel has linked the Maple Leafs to Zibanejad.
«With J.T. Miller and Vincent Trocheck down the middle, would the Rangers have any interest in moving Zibanejad's contract, which has another five years remaining and a cap hit of $8.5 million?,» Siegel wrote.

«More importantly, would Zibanejad be interested in waiving his no-move clause? If so, the Leafs need to have a meeting or two about it because Zibanejad is probably the best player in this entire bunch

«He wouldn't bring the same fire as Kadri or jam as Schenn. But, he upside is so much higher. He also happens to be 6 feet 2 and over 200 pounds (bigger than Kadri and Schenn) and younger than both (32).

If he bounces back to what he produced even two seasons ago, 72 points, the price point on the contract will feel right,» Siegel added.

«The five years remaining on that deal might make the Leafs squeamish, yet would still be a lesser commitment (and cap hit) than a free agent such as Bennett will likely require.» - Jonas Siegel
The Maple Leafs are likely to lose Tavares and star winger Mitch Marner to free agency means the team will now have over $25 million in cap space.
With the likelihood of Sam Bennett remaining in Florida, the Maple Leafs may look closer at the Rangers and Zibanejad and may find a deal I can send him to Scotiabank Arena.
