Former Boston Bruins goaltender John Henderson has sadly passes away at the age of 91.
Some unfortunate news strikes the hockey community as fans are mourning the loss of another inspiring figure, John Henderson who had a long journey to the NHL has sadly passed away.
John Henderson was the Boston Bruins oldest living goaltender at the age of 91 years old, until his death was announced on Wednesday morning.
"...he was the NHL's second-oldest goalie, second only to Hall of Fame legend Glenn Hall, who turned 93 on Oct. 3."
The Toronto, Ontario native, was originally supposed to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs, but had a outing with the GM which ultimately led him getting traded to the Boston Bruins, where he would manage to play 46 games for the organization from 1954 to 1956.
Henderson was famously known for his big figure as he stood at six-feet, five-inches, and was told to play a standup style with the Toronto Maple Leafs, but his size obviously wouldn't allow him to.
Henderson was also once told to use a knob of tape halfway down his stick that would be a remind for him to stand up if his blocker hand hit it, but he wasn't a fan of the suggestion and after a few minutes he went to the locker room and cut the knob of tape off.
"Hap Day realized what I'd done, called me over to the boards and asked who'd given me permission to cut the tape off. I told him, I did. I tried it your way, I can't adjust to it. I have to crouch. You liked me enough to bring me here, why change me?'
"Hap said, Well, that's not the way we do things around here,' and he walked away. I thought, Well, that's the end of that.' But a couple days later, I was traded to the Bruins."
On behalf of everyone here at NY Rangers Insider we send our deepest thoughts and condolences to the family and friends of John Henderson as they navigate through this difficult time.
