Santiago Espinal has found a new home again, agreeing to a minor-league deal with the Diamondbacks.

The former Blue Jays infielder, an All-Star back in 2022, was assigned to Triple-A Reno per the Aces' own announcement Wednesday night.

Arizona is now his third organization of the 2026 season.

Espinal broke camp with the Dodgers, filling in for an injured Tommy Edman for the first two and a half months of the year.

In 36 games there, he hit .268 with three doubles, a home run, and seven RBIs across 60 plate appearances.

Once Edman returned in mid-June, the Dodgers designated Espinal for assignment and eventually released him.

The Rangers picked him up next, sending him to Triple-A, where he slashed .262 with one double and six RBIs over 11 games before his release on July 28.

Why Arizona needed him right now

Espinal sat unsigned for nearly a month before the Diamondbacks came calling.

Arizona's infield picture got thinner this week. Ketel Marte went to the 10-day IL with a knee injury, and Nolan Arenado missed time with an intercostal strain.

That's exactly the kind of depth crunch that makes a versatile veteran like Espinal useful.

He's played every infield position besides catcher in his career, even logging time at first base with the Dodgers earlier this season.

For a Diamondbacks team still chasing a wild-card spot, that kind of flexibility is worth having in reserve.

Whether Espinal ever gets an actual call to the majors with Arizona is anyone's guess at this point.

Three organizations in one season is a rough way to spend a year for a player who once made an All-Star team in Toronto. Reno is just the newest stop.
