Official timeline as to when the Rangers are expected to name their next head coach was announced
The NHL coaching carousel has begun, as the firing of Peter Laviolette by the New York Rangers has set GM Chris Drury on a quest to find a replacement.
Names linked to the Rangers are David Carle, Jay Leach, John Tortorella, and Jay Woodcroft, and now we know when the New York Rangers plan on making some moves.
The New York Rangers are taking part in the recycling of NHL coaches, as Peter Laviolette has found himself back on the carousel until his turn is called again.
Upon his firing, GM Chris Drury was immediately rewarded with a multi-year extension with the New York Rangers. Giving him control over the next coaching hire and changes in the lineup for the team for the foreseeable future.
However, according to reports the New York Rangers are expected to hold interviews this upcoming week, indicating that we could see someone be named as the next head coach real soon.
There have been four names linked to the Rangers as candidates for the role in New York.
Carle recently turned down the Chicago Blackhawks head coaching position, removing himself from consideration. He's a two-time NCAA Champion and won back-to-back gold medals with Team USA in the IIHF WJC. The question is a matter of money, as he's still on contract with Denver until 2026-2027. His connection to defense prospect
Drew Fortescue would be beneficial.
John Tortorella would be a re-tread for the Rangers. He's an old battle axe of an coach, who preaches old-school hockey discipline, a strong two-hundred foot game and won a Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2004.
Four out of five seasons during his tenure with the Rangers, he took them to the postseason, only to lose early. He only made it to Round 3 in 2011-2012. His last successful run was with the Columbus Blue Jackets, sweeping Tampa Bay in 2019. Since then, he's been fired as the Flyers' Head Coach due to his outspoken nature.
Jay Woodcroft would be a coach who could turn this slumping team around. After taking over in Edmonton from Dave Tippett, his full season in 2022-2023 would see them make the playoffs, with a record of 50-23-9.
He's Todd McLellan's protege and has served in an assistant role in San Jose, and took a Head Coaching role in Bakersfield with the Condor's where he'd win a Calder Cup in 2021.
Leach has never been a head coach in the NHL, but has found limited success in the AHL with the Providence Bruins.
He's known for setting up a system that gives teams structure and discipline top-down. Leach has developed players at both the AHL and NHL levels, and could be beneficial if that is the kind of Coach GM Chris Drury is after.
