32 Thoughts podcaster and Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman feels that the New York Rangers reputation leaguewide has taken a hit after failing to make the playoffs after winning the President's Trophy the year prior.

It's a statement that reflects the status of the Rangers as this season has been nothing short of a disaster as the team fumbled for months after a strong start in October and early November.

Several factors have lead to the Rangers downfall this season

«I do think reputation wise, the Rangers have taken a hit this year,» Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman said. «Players notice how things like that happen. For them it is easier to bounce back because of who they are and where they play. You can recover quickly from that.» - Elliotte Freidman
Several factors including, the handling of moving Barclay Goodrow from the Rangers last offseason using waivers to circumvent his no trade list, to the handling of a leaguewide memo that was sent stating the Rangers were willing to shake up their core with Chris Kreider and Jacob Trouba as the main players to trade.
The handling of the trade of Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks where general manager Chris Drury used the same method as Goodrow which forced Trouba to decide.
This unraveled the Rangers, and the team began to spiral over the course of November and through December which helped cost them the season.

Rangers have begun their assessment and changes this offseason

With the season over, the Rangers have begun their assessment of the team and the coaching staff as the organization relieved head coach Peter Laviolette and Associate coach Phil Housley of their duties.
The organization has begun their search for their new head coach with several names including Mike Sullivan from the Pittsburgh Penguins, Rick Tocchet of the Vancouver Canucks and even Joel Quenneville as possible replacements.
The team will also need to evaluate the structure of the current lineup and make decisions on who will remain and who will leave the team as it's widely believed that Drury will make many changes to the lineup prior to the beginning of next season.
There is much work to be done, and it remains to be seen on whether players will come to the Rangers with how this season unfolded and it's unlikely that Drury will be ushered out of the organization as he has the full trust of James Dolan majority owner of Rangers and the Knicks.
