According to The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta, GM Chris Drury of the New York Rangers could be poised to make a major trade. It could involve superstar Artemi Panarin, and at this point, could it be considered a full rebuild?
The New York Rangers could look remarkably different in 2025-2026 if what the rumor mill is churning around Rangers forward
Artemi Panarin.
I don't know if that's the path they're going to take, and it might be totally premature for me to even bring it up, but we're going to hear some interesting storylines about how the New York Rangers retool for next season
After missing the Stanley Cup playoffs, GM Chris Drury prefers to keep the team in a win-now mode, with a small window of retooling, and David Pagnotta has the latest on the situation.
Panarin's Future With the Rangers
NHL Insider David Pagnotta dropped some harrowing news for New York Rangers fans who love Artemi Panarin.
According to Pagnotta, GM Chris Drury could explore trading the 100+ point superstar. The Russian wing will be entering the final year of his deal with the Rangers, which he signed in 2019.
Panarin's cap hit is a massive $11.64 million AAV against the Rangers' salary cap. With
Igor Shesterkin's raise, Drury could explore trading the forward not only to save some cap room, but in order to gain assets to retool with as well.
In the last few days, I'm starting to hear some interesting whispers surrounding Artemi Panarin. Now, I don't know if he's fully available, but he's got one year left on his contract, and they've got to decide whether they want to keep going with this core group or if they can move Panarin, get a significant return, and use that cap space - along with some of that capital - to rejig the roster.
This season, Panarin scored 89 points (37 goals, 52 assists) in 80 games with the Rangers.
Trading Panarin could net the Rangers a haul of prospects, assets, and draft capitals should GM Chris Drury decide to take the painful route of trading one of their top superstars.
With this news, Panarin joins the list of other Rangers players like Zibanejad, whose name continues to circle trade discussions.
