According to Elliotte Friedman of the 32 thoughts podcast and Sportsnet insider, the New York Rangers may have a new frontrunner for head coach in dismissed Pittsburgh head coach Mike Sullivan.

Over the past couple of weeks, rumors have been circulating around the Penguins if general manager Kyle Dubas would retain Mike Sullivan for another two years or relieve him of his duties. He chose to do the latter yesterday.

Sullivan linked to General manager Chris Drury from Team USA

Friedman announced that Sullivan has two years remaining on his contract and that the Rangers had heavy interest in Sullivan back in 2021 when the team decided to hire Gerald Gallant.
Many around the NHL feel that the Rangers have wanted Mike Sullivan to be their head coach for quite some time despite having Gerald Gallant and Peter Laviolette hired as Sullivan had been the head coach of the Penguins for 10 years.
Sullivan, who is 57 years old, has 917 regular-season games under his belt, split between the Boston Bruins and the Penguins. In that time, he has an impressive 479-311-127 record. He was with the Penguins from the 2015-16 season until the conclusion of the 2024-25 campaign, and had won 409 games with them, winning two Stanley Cups during his tenure there. Rangers will interview candidates despite Sullivan's availability

Despite Sullivan's availability, Drury will still interview candidates as there are many great people from assistant coaches to other head coaches who could help the Rangers for the foreseeable future.
Many feel that David Carle of the University of Denver is likely on juries short list and willing to give him an interview to see what he could bring to the Rangers if he has interest. Drury has stated that he is willing to give a first-time head coach a chance on his bench.
It will be an interesting next few weeks for the organization as Sullivan's availability remains present, the Rangers may want to scoop him up as fast as possible before another organization like the Boston Bruins or the Chicago Blackhawks would be willing to offer him a job.
