It appears that the New York Rangers may have to adjust their tactics if they want to acquire Buffalo Sabres star JJ Peterka as many feel a trade would be the route to take rather than an offer sheet.

Rumors have been swirling around the Rangers organization with Peterka for the past couple of weeks as he has become increasingly disinterested in remaining with the Sabres organization.

Rangers looking to get younger and more competitive

The main issue with the Rangers attempting to acquire Peterka through a offer sheet is that that Rangers do not on their second-round pick and the requirements states that each team who attempts an offer sheet needs to own their own draft picks to make the deal complete.
Peterka, who is 23 years old, scored 27 goals and added 41 assists for 68 points through 77 games this season, which comes out to a 0.89 points-per-game average.

Throughout his career, he has scored 67 goals and added 83 assists for 150 points through 238 games, which comes out to a 0.63 points-per-game average. He was drafted 34th overall in the second round by the Sabres in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft after a season in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) in Germany, where he scored seven goals and added four assists for 11 points through 42 games. - Jesse Courville-Lynch

If the Rangers were to make a deal for Peterka, the Sabres would likely demand their first-round pick in 2026, a third-round pick in 2026 along with the prospect like Brendan Othmann and a second prospect.

Sabres confident they can find a deal for Peterka

The Buffalo Sabres are confident that they can reach a deal with Peterka as they feel he is part of their cornerstone.
It's still early to predict what will happen but it's likely that Rangers general manager Chris Drury will keep working the phones and may find himself landing a top player for their core players it prepared to pay Peterka handsomely for his services.
If a trade were to take place, it would likely be at the NHL draft which is slated for June 27th.
