The New York Rangers Alexis Lafreniere hit a career milestone in the NHL this weekend, as he scored his 100th career assist. The goal came against the Anaheim Ducks on March 28th this weekend, a night where he'd tally 2 points total.
Alexis Lafreniere has hit a career milestone in the NHL on March 28th against the Anaheim Ducks.
That night during the 5-4 loss, there was a silver lining for the former 1st overall pick in 2020. He'd score 2 points (1 goal, 1 assist) and would do his part to keep the Rangers in the game against the Ducks.
Lafreniere would play 21 shifts against the Ducks, 16:16 TOI, scoring 2 points, with a -1 and 1 block that night.
Despite that milestone, Rangers fans aren't impressed:
It seems that no matter what, the former 1st-round pick in 2020 will never live down the bust label. As some other 1st-round picks on much worse teams have found a way to do better, including
Lucas Raymond on the Detroit Red Wings.
You can't help but feel the indignation of fans who have seen GM Chris Drury waste draft picks on players who haven't been able to live up to expectations in the NHL.
It appears that Lafreniere may be nothing more than a depth player in the NHL and, at best, a top-nine player in his prime.
It'd be beneficial for the Rangers if Lafrenier could heat up during this stretch of games, but we know it's not guaranteed.
The Rangers now have 77 points, and are just below the Ottawa Senators, who they are six points behind
He's scored a total of 191 points during his NHL career (91 goals, 100 assists) and earned a handsome contract with the team after a 57-point season.
At the end of the 2024-2025 NHL season, his current contract will expire, and he will earn $7.45 million AAV for the next seven years.
A richly rewarded effort for one great year with the team in 2023-2024, where he was a key piece in the President's Trophy run and the trip to ECF.
This milestone is significant for Lafreniere, who in 74 games has scored 43 points (16 goals, 27 assists).
Can he find a way to replicate his 57-point season in 2025-2026?
