The New York Rangers could add to their defensive depth with free agent TJ Brodie. Brodie was bought out by the Chicago Blackhawks and could be had for cheap. GM Kyle Davidson had to make way for the youth movement in Chicago, and GM Chris Drury could take advantage of the move.

TJ Brodie was once considered a top defenseman in the league in his prime. He'd help run the blue line with defenseman Mark Giordano, who has since taken on a player development role with the Maple Leafs.
For Brodie, he'd sign a 2-year deal with the Blackhawks after finishing 2023-24 with the Maple Leafs.
The deal would pay him $3.75 million AAV, $7.5 million total. However, he'd find himself lapped by young talent, and after a disappointing year in Chicago, he'd be bought out.
He'd find himself a scratch and would only play 54 games, scoring 10 points (2-8) in the Windy City.
While Brodie is no longer in his prime, as a puck-moving, offensive defenseman who can eat minutes and put a stop to the opposing team's top players, he's taken a dip in production over recent years.
If GM Chris Drury were to sign Brodie, it'd have to be for who he is now, instead of his past, like Davidson rewarded him for.
With his buyout, GM Chris Drury could sign him to a league-minimum deal and place him on the bottom pair where the defense could have a placeholder like Brodie until a better option arrives, whether from free agency, the draft, or Hartford.
Brodie could fulfill multiple roles, including in the AHL, in the NHL as the 6th or 7th defenseman, and as a mentor for players like Braden Schneider.
In the meantime, the New York Rangers' free agent acquisitions seem to have taken a lull.
