A Major development has just surfaced in the New York Rangers reuniting with former Captain and defenseman Ryan McDonagh after recent reports surfaced stating the Rangers should consider bring him back.

President and General Manager Chris Drury has completely changed the look of the New York Rangers heading into the 2025-26 season, as he traded away several key leaders of the team this offseason and last season, by trading away both former captain Jacob trouba, and most recently Chris Kreider to the Anaheim Ducks.
Something that clearly left a gap in the Rangers leadership department. However, GM Chris Drury has the perfect option to bring back a leader who is familiar with the organization. That player being veteran defenseman and former captain Ryan McDonagh.

Ryan McDonagh has proved himself to be a valuable asset

McDonagh served as the New York Rangers' Captain from 2014 to 2018 until he was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Where he signed a seven-year $4.725 million deal and would win two Stanley Cups in Tampa Bay.
He was the later traded to the Nashville Predators due to cap issues, but again would return to the Lightning in 2024. A reunion that makes total sense given McDonagh's history of success with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Why the New York Rangers should bring Ryan McDonagh back to the organization

It has been reported several times that the Tampa Bay Lightning are once again dealing with a cap crunch, and the New York Rangers must take advantage of this and utilize their weakness.
Chris Drury could work a deal with the Lightning that would see them retaining a percentage of his cap, as his $6.75 million cap lowers his trade value.
Acquiring Ryan McDonagh via trade wouldn't cost the Rangers much. The Lightning would be happy to move on from McDonagh for a late-round draft pick. The biggest reason behind McDonagh's low trade value is his $6.75 million cap hit.

McDonagh could be the trusted veteran in the Rangers' lineup for Mike Sullivan, and would add a meaningful presence on a blue line that is missing reliable depth.
